Book Review: Weregirl by C.D. Bell

weregirl-ciSynopsis: C. D. Bell’s WEREGIRL is a fast-paced teen thriller set in Tether, Michigan, a town on the brink of shutdown since it was stripped of its resources by corporate polluter Dutch Chemical. High school junior Nessa Kurland is a cross-country runner with her eyes set on one thing: a college scholarship as her one-way ticket out of Tether.

Talented teammate Cynthia Sinise invites Nessa on a nighttime run through Tether’s overgrown forest trails. But she speeds ahead, leaving Nessa alone to discover a trapped wolf. Nessa tries to free the animal but is badly bitten, seemingly ruining her hopes for a strong fall season with the cross-country team.

Instead, Nessa’s freakishly quick recovery is followed by improved running times. All her senses are heightened. Nessa has transformed.

She has become a werewolf.

TRB Review – 3.5/5

Weregirl is a feminist twist on a classic usually male-driven werewolf transformation story. It was dramatic, witty, and detailed – just not exactly my cup of tea.

A little bird told me that this was going to be better than the Twilight series, which I can happily say is true. It’s a much more feminist story with a very strong and determined female lead character. Unlike the gloomy and uninteresting Bella Swan, Nessa fights hard for what she believes in and although she is struggling through the story with her changes and adjusting to the new life that she’s be chosen for, she remains feisty and curious.

I unfortunately was not a fan of this author’s writing style. There were countless sentences where unnecessary information was added in parenthesis, I find this to be an overused and frankly loose form of writing that I have difficulty appreciating. This book is not necessarily dramatically high school level, but I would say that it is geared more so towards readers who appreciate or can relate to said age group’s maturity level and way of behaving. One thing that I did enjoy was the occasional pop of very expressive scenery and senses.

“She could hear the running of water, the music of wind in the trees. She could smell the heaviness of leaves turning to soil, the acidity given off the broken branch of a pine tree.” Weregirl, pg. 150

I was pleased that the author included more than just the expected teenage wolf drama. The side story of the town’s chemical exposure kept me intrigued, it was a buffer that was very welcome and moved the story farther along that just a normal “girl gets turned into a wolf and has to find her place in the world again” story. Overall, the story is well rounded and the characters are nicely developed. This was an uncorrected ARC, so it’s very possible that the grammatical issues I had were entirely based off this fact. Regardless, I was impressed with the multi-faceted story weaving that was done, and the fact that this wasn’t your average teenage angst werewolf tale. I’d suggest this to anyone that doesn’t mind a little high school drama and enjoys a good feminist lead character.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author’s publicist in exchange for an honest review.

About the author:

weregirl-author-picWhen she’s not biking the streets of Brooklyn, NY, you can find C. D. Bell writing in a decrepit RV clinging to the side of a hill in upstate New York, trying to teach herself to watercolor, or inventing her own recipes. She is a voracious reader of anything and everything fantasy, supernatural, or romance. And she swears that the monsters she often writes about are not real— at least she hopes not.

The second installment of the WEREGIRL trilogy is already in the works.

Book Subscription: The Attic Box by Blue Spider Press

Last month I was chosen to be a rep for the Attic Box run by Blue Spider Press via Instagram from November through January! I received my first box this past weekend, and I wanted to share it with my fellow book loving bloggers! It was themed ‘Nostalgia’ and I think that the contents were SPOT ON in an 80’s/90’s childhood throwback kind of way! Included below is a full unboxing, so please be aware of spoilers if you have yet to receive yours!

unboxing3

Each month you receive 3 gently used (I prefer to call them “previously loved”) books as well as a sample of coffee or tea and 5-7 unique goodies. Each month is themed, but the books you receive do not necessarily follow along with said theme since you provide your preferences when signing up, the team works diligently to select books unique to you. That is something I have yet to see in a book subscription box, which makes this one so neat because although everyone is receiving the same general thing, each box varies and none are exactly alike!!

As I mentioned, the November theme was ‘Nostalgia’ which was specifically meant to take you back to your childhood or, “the good ‘ole days.” I absolutely loved the little goodies that were included in this box because they really hit on the big themes and the stuff is all useful, which if you’ve read my subscription reviews, is very important to me!

There were stickers (which I am definitely putting on my car, uhm, hello dashboard mustache!), handcrafted pins with images from our favorite cartoons, and a Magic card and die. I wasn’t sure what to do with that last one, but on the info card it was mentioned that it’d make an excellent bookmark, duh, how did I not consider that?!

Two more of the great goodies included were an issue of Batgirl and a Superwoman figurine! I swear the other day I was talking with someone about Batgirl, I have a slight obsession with Batman so it only makes sense. Keeping in mind that the theme items are not curated per person, I was thrilled with the sense of psychic-ness that came out of this theme! I am not one for little toys and “stuff” that goes on a shelf, but with the new Superwoman and Justice League movies coming out soon I am 100% no shame in my game going to put this bad boy on my bookshelf!!

If you know me at all, you know that this is deserving of it’s own picture and category because I LOVE COFFEE!!

The great thing about the Attic Box is that they include a sample of either coffee or tea each month, based upon your preference when signing up. I love both, so I am thinking it may vary month to month because I was selfish and marked both boxes :) I have never had Boyers coffee, and I am excited to brew this new sample pot of caffeinated goodness!

On to the best part. Most, if not ALL bookish monthly subscription boxes only contain one book, if at all depending on the subscription. The Attic Box curates 3, yes THREE books for each box they send out. These books are in gently used condition and no two boxes are the same. The uniqueness of this subscription just gives me the warm fuzzies inside. Candice and Jeremy are doing such a fantastic job in this book box boom!

These are the three lovelies that I received in my November box, and my grandma has already contemplated stealing one or two to read in the coming weeks! I’m adding them to my TBR list and am thrilled to expand my readership to some excitingly different genres than I would normally pick up!

I’d like to think that I am one of those people who appreciates old things versus new, so being able to represent this box is a thrilling experience for me! The value is beyond fantastic for the amount that you receive just considering the books alone! If you are a kindred spirit that loves to sit down with a cup of coffee (or tea) and a good book, this is the box for you! The personalization alone makes this a one of a kind experience, you will not be disappointed!

You can find pricing and shipping information on their website, www.bluespidersattic.com, as well as more information about the contents and process of signing up. If you’ve read this and are intrigued, please remember to use my rep code TRB10 for 10% off your first box or subscription!

READER QUESTION: I’d love to know, what is your favorite part about buying used books? I always hear people say the smell of an old book, but I adore the possible history behind it – who held it before you and where the book has been! Please comment your thoughts below and if you have any questions about this box I’d be happy to answer as best I can.
